The Lordship of Jesus Christ

by Derek Gentle

Matthew 16:13-18

Introduction:

It is possible to say good things about Jesus without saying enough.

The opinion of the public:

  • John the Baptist: Similar messages compare 3:2 and 4:17
  • Elijah: Similar emphases (prayer, miracles, attacked false religion)
  • Elijah was the expected forerunner of the Messiah
  • Jeremiah: Similar personalities (compassionate)
  • Elijah and Jeremiah were considered the "big 2" prophets in Jesus' day
  • One of the prophets - knew that these didn't fit Jesus, but not sure which one
  • I read once where Kahil Gibran was saying that the religions of the world are like a hall of windows and that Jesus is like one window allowing light inside. However, the testimony of Scripture and the fact of the Lordship of Christ tells us that He is not a window allowing light in, but rather is the "Light of the world".

    1. The Fact of His Lordship - Christ's Lordship is seen in that:

    1.1 Jesus is God
"Yet for us there is only one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live" - 1st Corinthians 8:6

Jesus is the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" Genesis 1:1

    Jesus receives worship
"Let all the angels of God worship Him" - Hebrews 1:6

    1.2 Jesus is Our Owner
"For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's" - Romans 14:9

    1.3 Jesus is Our Judge
". . .For we shall all stand before the judgement seat of Christ" - Romans 14:10

    1.4 Jesus is the Victor
"But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" 1st Corinthians 15:57

    1.5 Jesus is Our Master
". . .Likewise he who is called while free is Christ's slave. You were bought with a price. . ." - 1st Corinthians 7:22-23

    2. The Recognition of His Lordship
"Therefore, let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ" - Acts 2:36

    3. The Confession of His Lordship
"That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead you will be saved" - Romans 10:9

    4. Submission to His Lordship
"That at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. - Philippians 2:10-11
