Enemies: Insights From The Psalms

I. WHAT ENEMIES ARE LIKE; THINGS THEY DO

A. They Are ANGRY People

". . . The rage of my enemies . . ." Psalm 7:6

B. They attack in GROUPS

". . . My deadly enemies surround me . . ." Psalm 17:9

C. They are willing to LIE and use THREATS

"Do not deliver me to the hands of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and such as breathe out violence." Psalm 27:12

D. They work secretly to SET TRAP

"Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, for You are my strength . . . And have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy" Psalm 31:10-11

E. They REPROACH us for our sins

". . . My strength fails because of my iniquity, and my bones waste away. I am a reproach among all my enemies . . ." Psalm 31:10-11

F. They exchange knowing looks and MALICIOUS WINKS

"Let them not rejoice over me who are wrongfully my enemies; nor let them wink with the eye who hate me without cause." Psalm 35:19

G. They try constantly to CATCH US IN WRONGDOING

"For they do not speak peace, but devise deceitful matters against those who are quiet in the land. They also opened their mouth wide against me, and say, 'Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen it.'" Psalm 31:20-21

H. They are STRONG and they MULTIPLY

"But my enemies are vigorous, and they are strong; and those who hate me wrongly have multiplied." Psalm 38:19

I. They DON'T CARE HOW WELL YOU TREAT THEM

"Those also render evil for good, they are adversaries, because I follow what is good" Psalm 38:20

J. They WANT US GONE

"My enemies speak evil of me: 'When will he die and his name perish?'" Psalm 41:5

K. They CHALLENGE OUR SPIRITUALITY

"As with the breaking of my bones, my enemies reproach me, while they say to me all day long, 'Where is your God?'" Psalm 42:10

L. They just KEEP COMING AT US

"My enemies would hound me all day" Psalm 56:2

M. They CONSPIRE TOGETHER and WAIT UNTIL WE ARE VULNERABLE

"For my enemies speak against me; and those who lie in wait for my life take counsel together" Psalm 71:10

N. They LAUGH AT US

". . . Our enemies laugh among themselves" Psalm 80:6

 

II. HOW ENEMIES AFFECT US

A. They make us GRIEVE

"Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?" Psalm 43:2

B. They make us FEEL ALONE

". . . My adversaries are all before You. Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; and comforters, but I found none." Psalm 69:19-20

C. They become the FOCUS OF OUR THOUGHTS

"How long shall I take counsel in my soul [NIV, "wrestle with my thoughts"], having sorrow in my heart daily? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?" Psalm 13:2

 

III. HOW WE SHOULD RESPOND TO HAVING ENEMIES

A. CALL ON THE LORD

"I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies." Psalm 18:3

B. ASK GOD TO TEACH YOU THROUGH THE PROCESS

"Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me in a smooth path because of my enemies." Psalm 27:11

C. WAIT ON THE LORD

"Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!" Psalm 27:14

D. STICK TO THE BOOK

"Many are my persecutors and my enemies, yet I do not turn from your testimonies." Psalm 119:157

E. SEEK SHELTER

"Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies; in You I take shelter." Psalm 143:9
